The Indian Railways is thinking about permitting wedding receptions on its platforms. The move comes as the fourth largest railway station in the world scrambles for ideas to boost its profits, according to officials who spoke to Deccan Chronicle.

The Western Railways has picked platforms at Surat and Navapur railway stations, which it is willing to put out on lease to host weddings.

The Rail ministry will take the final call on this, but it’s almost certain that even if the proposal gets the nod, high-traffic and crowded stations such as those in Mumbai, won’t be testing the idea.

"Surat station is massive, and there are people there who would actually pay to have their wedding receptions or parties on platforms as well," an official told the publication.

"We will propose platform no. 4 for the project as it has two-three booking offices, which is ideal for these kind of functions," the person added.
